Ingrown nails are annoying and extremely painful. If not treated at an early stage, they may result in aggravation or injury.

Improper cutting of the nail: Toenails should not be cut in a rounded shape. They ought be cut in a straight line, ensuring that the length is not too small. Never cut the edges of the nail separately; they become the major cause of ingrown nails.
Tight shoes: The most frequent cause of ingrown toenails is improper fitting shoes. Tight shoes make the nails firm and hence they start growing inside the skin of the toe.
Age factor: Deformity of the nails generally occurs between the ages 14 to 25. Unfortunately, people of this age group are also generally unaware of the problem. At this age, the deformity can result in a lot of pain to the person. That being said, ingrown nails can still occur at any age.
This defect is categorized into three stages Mild, Unbearable and finally, Severe. All these stages cause swelling and redness of the infected area while the pain increases with each phase. Generally, the contagion occurs in the big toenail; however, the other toes can also be affected. These ingrown nails can be self-treated easily and do not require surgery unless the condition is Severe.

The good thing is that ingrown nails can be treated at home by applying these simple remedies:
1. Proper cleaning of the foot:
The first common remedy is soaking your foot in warm and soapy water, which helps soften the skin and remove any kind of infection-causing bacteria from the foot. Epsom Salts are easily available and can be added to the water to help soften the skin and draw the nail out of the skin. One must soak the infected foot in water two to four times per day.
2. Use Castile Soap:
If soaking in warm water isn’t enough, then the foot must be properly washed and cleaned twice a day and kept clean and dry afterwards. Castile soap, which contains natural herbs and other wholesome ingredients, can help to cleanse any kind of bacteria from your foot.
3. Vinegar washes:
Vinegar has antibacterial properties that can help keep the infected area clean from any kind of bacteria. A quarter cup of vinegar added to warm water can be used to soak the infected foot into it, killing infectious microbes and relieving your pain.
4. Use dental floss:
Dental floss or thin cotton wisps can be quite useful in treating an ingrown nail. Place some dental floss under the nail to helps it shift to the right direction instead inside the skin. Flavoured dental floss will cause a burning sensation so be sure to use plain ones.
5. Avoid tight footwear:
Since the most frequent cause of ingrown nails is compression from wearing pointed heels and/or tight footwear, they should be avoided when suffering from the deformity. The toenails need to be unenclosed for several days to prevent the condition from becoming more severe.
6. Cutting the ingrown nail:
Soak the affected foot in warm water with castile soap or Epsom salts. After 20 minutes, the nail should soften. Gently push back the swollen skin to cut the nail from the edges, and strictly not the middle. Place a piece of cotton between the nail and the swollen skin so that it does not regrow inside the skin. Finally avoid tight shoes and keep on cleaning the foot for several days afterwards.
